STORMY UPDATE: SUNDAY 2/19

Writer: Sven SundgaardSven Sundgaard

HEADLINES:

First Monday:

We have a more minor system coming through Sunday night into Monday. It will just dump light accumulations for southern Minnesota/ Twin Cities (1" or less) ...

Northern Minnesota will see more significant accumulations however. Some spots could see 5" to 6" in northern Minnesota.

The BIG event will come in two waves it still appears... with snow developing Tuesday afternoon and falling into early Wednesday:

The first wave will dump 3 to 6 inches of snow. We'll get a bit of a break during the day Wednesday with mainly scattered light snow showers falling. The second wave will start up in earnest late Wednesday through Thursday into Thursday night. This looks to be the heaviest snow and the worst conditions/impacts.

The models remain in remarkable agreement on a very heavy snow event. The ratios will still be a bit of a question, but even assuming a 10:1 ratio, with liquid amounts of 1.00 to 1.50 inches, we still get 10 to 15 inches of total snow. It's likely the ratio will be higher, perhaps as high as 15:1, then you get 15" to 20" ! This will be a record-setting event likely.

The probabilities reflect this crazy agreement in the models and moisture content. We have a 19% chance of getting 2 feet of snow in the Twin Cities, which is ridiculously high actually. The chance of 12 or more inches is at 71%... also a high figure for Minnesota snowfalls. Keep in mind this is a multi-day event.
