weekend storm chances

Here's a break down of the rest of the weekend forecast thunderstorm timing and possible severe weather.

The best chances for thunderstorms in the Twin Cities will come Sunday in the overnight hours and then especially late Monday as the low pressure area / front moves in closer. That doesn't mean we won't see a few possible showers/left over thunder late Saturday night into early Sunday morning however.

The focus continues to be this slow moving low pressure/frontal boundary. Storms will again develop there late Saturday and then drift east, mostly fizzling out- but those left overs are possible in the east. Better chances north.

There is a risk for severe weather where the storms initially develop. That's why the sis is closer to the low yet Saturday into Sunday morning.

As the area of low pressure / front moves slowly east, the severe risk will also shift. Late Sunday the risk is enhanced (level 3 out of 5) for southwest and central Minnesota.

The Twin Cities and eastern Minnesota is in the slight risk (level 2 out of 5) mostly for the chance that whatever does develop could hold together still as severe Sunday night. The main threats would be high wind, hail. The initial storms in western MN/ SD could produce isolated tornadoes Sunday evening.

Monday is really when we're looking for that risk of strong to severe storms in the Twin Cities and eastern Minnesota, western Wisconsin.

The enhanced risk (Level 3 out of 5) is perfectly molded for the possible derecho (bow echo / straight lined wind) event Monday evening.

This is outlined by the European model at 8pm Monday evening:

There is a substantial threat of high winds (60-70 mph+ gusts) and large hail (1"/quarter size or larger) widespread in central/eastern Minnesota Monday evening.

The front clears us early Tuesday and temps will drop into the pleasant low to mid 70s Tuesday into the rest of next week as we start June.
