Windier than usual?

Writer: Sven SundgaardSven Sundgaard

Many have asked: "Is it windier than usual?" .... YES, it has been.

April has been averaging wind speeds near 13 mph, up from the average of 11 mph, that's about 16% more wind than usual. 70% of the days of April so far have had wind gusts over 20 mph as well.

It's not just been April, since January, we've been averaging higher than normal wind speeds. This is our fourth consecutive month of above normal winds. December was actually below normal.

So it's not just your imagination, it has been very windy. The reason for it is the up and down in temperature that's been more than usual resulting in cooler than normal conditions since mid January also. Wind is simply air on the move: as warm air moves in and cold air moves out and visa versa, that creates a lot of wind.
